Descendants

Another grandson joined our family this week! Until I had grandchildren, I didn’t realize I could love someone else’s child as much as I do my own. But it’s easy!

I was also surprised by the intensity of the love I feel for my great grandchildren. I now feel pretty sure I’ll love their children intensely too, even though probably from the other side of the veil. I’d grieve to even imagine losing any, for generations.

I was reading in Nephi 15 today about the overpowering grief Nephi felt after seeing in vision the falling away and eventual destruction of his descendants. I can imagine how he might have felt watching loved little ones come to apostasy and extinction by war with his brothers’ descendants.

Surely the desire to save the remnants of his family was a big part of what drove him to testify of Christ, and to record his testimony on metal plates so that it could eventually be recovered for the distantly seen Gentiles to bring to them.

And surely we’re blessed when we share his words with others, whether the remnant of his descendants, or the next generation of our own.
