Flowing with milk and honey
As I was freezing milk to provide for the winter while the goats are dry, I began thinking how grateful I am for our little piece of ground. Especially since Halls began adventures in beekeeping, we might call it a land flowing with milk and honey, as promised and sought longingly for in scripture.
Well, ok, not exactly flowing. Our goats are tremendous producers but we truck in a bunch of feed to make that happen. And although we saw bees feeding all summer, I’m doubtful that there was enough nectar for them to thrive without the clover that used to bloom in the orchard. Not many of the wild flowers around us have survived the recent drought.
What would it take to make our area flow with milk and honey? Goats, the biblical milk source, need fresh green browse, little trees and saplings rather than grass. Bees need season long blossoms, not just spring flowers, and both need plentiful water. Those things don’t appear in a desert even with the best efforts of people. They can only come with plenty of rain as a blessing from God
D&C 38:
17 And I have made the earth rich, and behold it is my footstool, wherefore, again I will stand upon it.
18 And I hold forth and deign to give unto you greater riches, even a land of promise, a land flowing with milk and honey, upon which there shall be no curse when the Lord cometh;
19 And I will give it unto you for the land of your inheritance, if you seek it with all your hearts.
That’s a promise for our coming time, not referring to the land given to and lost by the people of Israel.
I can’t wait!
