The Rock

O

It was a beautiful sunny morning, on a black sand beach. Waves crashed on a little rocky promontory and frothed onto the beach where the children ran and played in the surf. Sand washed over our feet and rolled away in the water in a continual shifting. The rocky cliffs behind us were covered in tropical vines and trees. On the promontory we found pools teeming with small ocean creatures, sheltered and secure in the sea water despite the violence of the waves that crashed around them.
I thought about the wise man building his house upon the rock rather than the sand, and here was a beautiful illustration that other living things like vines and barnacles are sheltered and nurtured by the Rock, as are we.
Psalms 62: 5-8
My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.
